How it all began
Founded in April 1910 by inventor Frederick J. Osius, the Hamilton Beach Manufacturing Company took its name from two men Osius hired, Louis Hamilton and Chester Beach. Hamilton was the company's advertising manager, and Beach worked as a mechanic. Osius paid Hamilton and Beach $1000 each for the right to use their names instead of his own. The company mostly sold products that Osius invented and patented. Chester Beach invented a high-speed fractional motor in 1905, which the company used in many of its products. Hamilton and Beach left the company in 1913 to form their own firm, Wisconsin Electric Company.
Meanwhile, in 1920, Proctor & Schwartz, Inc. was formed and focused on thermostatically controlled irons and toasters. Osius sold Hamilton-Beach to Scovill Manufacturing in 1922.
Around 1960, Proctor & Schwartz Electric became interested in the Silex Company who manufactured coffeemakers and irons. The companies merged and offered consumers a wide assortment of household appliances.
Vision
In 1990, NACCO Industries, Inc. brought the two major appliance manufacturers – Hamilton Beach and Proctor-Silex together to create the largest U.S. manufacturer of small kitchen appliances.
Hamilton Beach continues to grow with a new image and continued dedication to serving consumers. Based outside of Richmond, Virginia, they employ 550 people globally and sell over 33 million appliances every year.
In 1995 Hamilton Beach expanded internationally with Brazil, India, and China being the newest markets for the company. The brand name strength continues to earn the company credibility and new consumers.
